This is a picture of Mukta Akter from Begumganj, Kurigram, as she says about the flood situation in Bangladesh, "There are water all around. Peoples from nearby Begumganj have taken refuge in this high ground. Here, there were no toilet facility and women and girls previously suffered a lot. CARE Bangladesh has built a hygiene toilet facility which has been useful for this community people specially for women and girls."
SUFAL Project is using the Forecast Based Early Action (FbA) mechanism to take early actions based on climate forecast to respond to the monsoon floods by supporting inundated households in Ulipur, Kurigram. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, additional measures need to be taken to reduce risk of transmission during evacuation and in flood shelters. To mitigate the risk, SUFAL Project has handed over personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to Union Disaster Management Committees (UDMC) for distribution at flood shelters and evacuation boats in most vulnerable unions. PPE kits include masks, gloves, soaps, hand sanitizers and COVID-19 risk communication materials for use by local government administration, frontline workers and volunteers supporting the flood response.
Supporting Flood Forecast-based Action and Learning in Bangladesh (SUFAL Project) is implemented by CARE Bangladesh, Concern Worldwide and Islamic Relief Bangladesh, with technical support from Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System in flood-prone districts of Kurigram, Gaibandha and Jamalpur. The project is funded by EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid - ECHO.
