In Guatemala 2000 indigenous women that are organized in women groups or associations are being strengthened on production capacity and organization through trainings on good agricultural practices, certification, organisational strenghtening, advocacy and literacy. The women also learn how to negotiate with buyers and CARE helps them to get access to markets.
In the surroundings of these women, ‘machismo’, discrimination and violence against women is often still a major issue that could hamper business development. CARE organizes awareness raising sessions for both men and women to improve the position of women in society and to increase awareness on women’s rights. During trainings, nannies are being hired to take care of the babies and children, so women have their hands free and can fully focus on themselves and their personal development.
This program is part of a worldwide program in 11 countries in which CARE, with support of the H&M Foundation, provide more than 100.000 women in poor communities with access to tools, knowledge, skills training and/or seed capital to start up or to expand their businesses. Women will be trained according to their needs, in sales expertise, general business development skills, and financial literacy. More info: http://bit.ly/2bTq5kp and www.skillpower.net
