Children suffer the most from the current situation in Somalia. More than 1.4 million of them are severely malnourished. Eight-month-old Abdirahman is one of them. When he arrives at one of CARE's 56 health centers, he weighs 5.2 kilograms - at least three kilograms too few for his age and size. His parents are former cattle herders. His father has no work. On days when he finds a day job, such as construction, the family can eat. "We eat three or four times a week," reports Hodan Mohammed, 18, mother of Abidrahman. At the CARE health center, Abdirahman receives special milk to help him gain weight. Within three days, he has gained 200 grams. Often, the facilities are the only place for mothers and pregnant women to go to. Every day more and more mothers come with their malnourished children looking for help. The severely malnourished children are very weakened. They are more susceptible to diseases such as tuberculosis or malaria, the course of which is often severe. Especially in childhood, malnutrition can reduce physical and mental development. The respiratory muscles become weaker, they breathe less, and there are fewer heart beats. Many of the severely malnourished children require immediate emergency care. Often they are sick, have a high fever and need to be cared for in a hospital. But these are often several hundred kilometers away.
