DHAKA August 8, 2020 – US Ambassador Earl Miller flew to Gaibandha (on a special flight) today to personally handover assistance to the flood-affected families in Fulchari upazila, Gaibandha district. Part of an ongoing program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), these families are receiving additional support with the widespread flooding that continue to affect northern Bangladesh since end of June. He is joined by Thomas Pope, Director for USAID Office of Food and Humanitarian Assistance and Walter Mwasaa, Chief of Party from CARE.
Ambassador Miller moved around the area on a boat as most of the area has been submerged in floodwater. “People’s suffering are particularly immense this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The US Government responds to their needs by ensuring swift action that would help them access their basic daily needs, and hopefully more,” he shared. Based on the severity of the damages, the current response will assist 1,460 families in Gaibandha and Kurigram districts through cash support of 4,500 BDT (55 USD), hygiene kits, and messages tackling health and hygiene awareness. Each kit includes a laundry soap, a bath soap, two kilograms of detergent powder, a pair of reusable masks, two packets of sanitary napkins, a bucket with lid, and a mug.
He added, “with the rural households’ ability to respond and cope to shocks being tested again this year, this is an exemplary portrayal of the US Government’s solid support to the people of Bangladesh. We provide long-term support to the most vulnerable through our development programs, and when an emergency like this comes, all the more that we step up to ensure that people’s lives and livelihoods are being protected through our timely assistance. We have worked with CARE since xxxx where we have achieved results that have changed the lives especially of women and girls in Bangladesh and we aim to continue working together.” About 20 people participated in the handover activity to ensure physical distancing, but CARE will continue the distribution by delivering cash and hygiene items house-to-house to curb the potential spread of coronavirus.
