Hanin (26) faced many challenges as a young female entrepreneur in Amman, Jordan. After completing CAREs course in business management, she has more clients than ever. Her dream is to inspire and hire women. This is her story:
Ever since I was little, I’ve enjoyed collecting seeds and planting them. I had the idea of planting things on the roof while I was at university. I started by growing strawberries, but I switched to lettuce as they are rare in Jordan.
I created my own business because I wanted to be able to provide for myself. People kept telling me that I was too young to own a business and that I should get another job. But there was no need for another job. Now my salary is double the amount that I’d make if I had listened. When I work, I am improving my own business instead of someone else’s.
I first heard of CARE through social media. I was very excited when I was accepted to participate in the program, because I had been growing my own fruits and vegetables for a year. This was my chance to grow my business. Up until then, I had no one assisting me or supporting me.
The people that I met at CARE were very nice and supportive. Some of them even became customers. Because of this, I wanted to do my best and work hard. It gave me a boost. A lot of people had liked my idea before, but nobody supported me. CARE loved my idea and they supported me.
Through CARE I learnt about capacity building, business skills and entrepreneurial development. CAREs course gave me an insight into how the market works, how to promote my product and how to expand. Now I can do pricing, calculations and make my business a successful project. After completing the course, they gave me a grant to expand the project. With this, I was able to buy some equipment that helped me maximise the productivity. I was very optimistic about that.
At CAREs course, everybody wanted to help each other. I made some very good friends. We were exchanging resources and information. Everybody shared their experiences, like how to do the packaging and design. It was very special. The amount of knowledge and networking was quite exceptional. I haven’t felt such a strong sense of community anywhere else.
When I go to agricultural areas with male owners, I sometimes feel like I am in the wrong place. I can get certain looks. But I overcome this by providing examples of successful women in this field. I show them that I know what I am doing.
In the future, I would like to hire other women to work at my business. I want to show women that if they are motivated, they can do whatever they want. They can work hard and be empowered. If I faced these challenges and was able to overcome them, so can they.
My goal is to grow my business and improve my community. I also want to inspire a passion for growing plants. I want to make people love agriculture, because agriculture is the basis for life. Without plants we wouldn’t be able to survive. Plants purify the air we breathe.
I love owning my own business and being my own boss. My advice to women is to not be afraid. Just keep going. Pursue your dream, even if it means starting with something small on the roof.
