Interview with Juana

****English Transcript *****
[00:00:06 Sofia Sprechmann: Good morning fellow Juanita, How are you doing?
Juana: Good morning, I am doing very well, superb because is such a special day today.
Sofía: Tell me why this day is special, Juanita.
Juana: This day is very special because we have received support from CARE Ecuador with the donation of over 4,000 soaps that are going to benefit fellow recyclers. [00:00:35]
Sofía: Juanita tell me a bit about the impact of the pandemic for recyclers
Juana: The impact for recyclers has been rather hard. We were not able to go out, we were in our homes for over 3 months and that impact, causes in some cases, lots of pain for fellows that did not have a daily sustenance [00:01:00] for their family´s food. For us, for instance as RENAREC leaders (National Network of Recyclers of Ecuador) they would call us and say “we cannot anymore, what do we do?” and we showed them what to do with little, even very little. The effort that we are doing, we will get through this fellows, we will make it. With the support of many institutions and foundations that are supporting us. We cannot lose hope, we are going to get through this pandemic and we will make it through together.
That for us [leaders] has been [00:01:30] a extremely hard challenge because of the economic side, because we did not have our dainly income for our households [00:01:37]
Sofía: Juanita, you´ve done and extraordinary job as a leader for the Association of Recyclers to help members of the association. One of CARE´s support programs were the cash transfers of a 120 dollars each to help recyclers´ families in order to buy food, medicine what was necessary. Tell me Juanita, How was the experience to help out setting out the aid? Because for this, you had to call people over the phone, explain how the ATM machine was going to work. How did you feel to be able to provide that help to others? Was it hard, was it easy? And your role in that help reaching out to all of your fellows, Juanita [00:02:30]
Juanita: Well, for… us when we found out we were going to get a 120 dollars for us, it was a moment of happiness and hope for over 1,200 recyclers that work at t national level. We did not mind working on this, the whole board. The partners, carrying out the technical aspect supported us so much while we gather the data, collecting the data of the fellows, their ID numbers for us, we did not mind doing that. It was a big challenge but we were pretty much 24 hours a day on this, but we managed for this to become a reality, this money bonus and that our colleagues, fellows have that bonus [00:03:15]
For me, for instance, it was a challenge and a great experience that I received it in my heart where I was able to support my fellows, getting Ahold and communicating day and night, begging them and insisting. Calling them again and again “fellows” because I wanted them to get that bonus. The challenge and the most important bit, was the responsibility that CARE gave me when I had the 190 codes under my responsibility so I could deliver it to my fellows [she refers to codes to withdraw the cash transfer] and that was a major challenge, a goal that I reached. [00:03:47]
The majority – I think I only had 4 fellows that blocked their ATM cards- the rest, 120 [refers to the cash transfer amount] 190 made it, at the first try. Because I insisted, insisted and reached the goal for my colleagues to reach 120 so for me there is that satisfaction and overwhelming emotion when I see people who see our worth of us recyclers: that see the value of our work, the value of our efforts and yes, there are angels that protect us, that see us and help us [00:04:21]
Thanks to these 120 dollars there are a lot of families that had money to buy food, to bring something home to their families.
In other cases, there were fellows that had to pay rent because they were about to be evicted because they could not pay rent. Water, electricity and people who also needed the money to buy medicine, because there are people that are sick and are diabetic, high blood pressure and all of that.
Seniors were those who needed it the most. So for us, for me as a RENAREC leader this was a great experience [00:05:00] with great love, to receive this support and help fellows so they can get their 120 dollars.

[00:05:09] Sofía: Thank you Juanita for your words but most of all, thank you for your leadership. Because you have been a leader not only in recycling issues but a humanitarian leader. This means being able to help others and you have made this happen.
We at CARE would not be able to do our work, to reach out to people, if it wasn’t through leaders like you [00:05:38] so I want to hug you, the pandemic does not allow us to do so, but I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the work you do in pursuit of the wellbeing for those that need it most in Ecuador. Thank you Juanita for your words. [00:05:54]
Juana: Thank you for the support that we you give recyclers, for the great support: Now with the soap donation that we need, because we have been trained in COVID, how we are going to use our biosecurity supplies, how to protect our health and the health of our family and our citizens. How we have to arrive to a place, reach out to them. With the training we also learned how to handle hazardous waste [00:06:30] also where there are families that are infected. So we have to educate our citizens stressing out to separate waste, so they do not hand out hazardous waste that is contaminated. So this is big for us, I want to thank you from the bottom of my full heart. We are fulfilled, as leaders, to have support with a grain of sand so the aid reaches [00:07:00] 57 organizations at a national level.
For us, this is huge and I have nothing else to say but to thank CARE, Avina Foundation and *inaudible and everyone for this great support. God bless you, wherever you are God triples that efforts you make for us, may God Bless you from the bottom of my heart.
Sofía: Thank you, Juanita, Thank you.
