Healthcare in Yemen is extremely limited as a result of the conflict, with only half of health facilities fully functional. Reproductive health (RH) is a particularly underserved and underfunded sector. With funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), CARE is contributing to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity by safeguarding life-saving reproductive health services in crisis-affected areas of Taiz Governorate. CARE is planning to produce a video focusing on RH in Yemen with the aim of raising awareness of a) the work being done by CARE, b) the huge needs that exist, and c) the gaps in funding. The audience for the video is intended to be international – with an emphasis on the INGO and donor community, as well as RH policymakers.
There are estimated to be over 7 million women of reproductive age in Yemen, and the UN estimates that half of them – 3.5 million women – are in acute need of assistance. According to the UN, Yemen now holds one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the region – up to 385 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. Only half of healthcare facilities in Yemen are fully functional. The UN estimates that up to 85,000 pregnant women are at risk of severe complications with immediate danger to their lives unless they have access to life-saving maternal healthcare. 75,000 pregnant women are at risk of developing complications due to the dire state of health services in Yemen.
