9 month old Chiok Kuol Kaang was admitted to the MSF health centre on February 28 2017 for severe malnutriton after arriving the day before in the Bentiu Protection of Civilians (POC) site from Koch county, Unity State. After being discharged on 14th March he was enrolled on CARE's supplementary feeding programme where he is given plumpy nut food supplement. Koch is one of the 3 counties in Unity State where famine was declared in February 2017. They came to the POC because of lack of food at home. As his mother Nyapen Puok says; "we kept thinking we wuld harvest at the end of last year [2016] but we couldn't. We were attacked and beaten in our homes every day. We harvested a little 3 months ago but most of it was taken by armed men.
before the crisis we ate all the time. Now we eat once a day." Chiok's father was chased away by armed men in April 2016 and they haven't seen him since. Nyapen has 6 children and Chiok is the youngest. She hasn't been able to produce milk since giving birth to Chiok as she doesn't eat enough food to produce any.
