10 September 20
Heavy rainfall in Niger from mid-July has caused flooding in several localities across the country, causing extensive property damage and loss of life. In addition to the flooding caused by persistent rain, additional flooding has occurred due to the flooding of the Niger River and its tributaries and other seasonal rivers. The floods, which have already begun, are likely to worsen in the coming days due to rising waters. CARE is responding with cash distributions to some of the worst affected in the capital Niamey (starting 10 September 2020)
The Niger government authorized temporary resettlement of those displaced in classrooms as a first response to the crisis and began a distribution of food (cereals, salt, oil, sugar) and non-food items, but needs remain huge.
In Niger, 329,958 people had been affected by flooding with 65 deaths. About 31,960 houses have collapsed and 5,768 hectares of farmland destroyed. Maradi, Dosso, Tahoua and Niamey are the most affected regions. 2020's flooding has affected 10 times more people than the same time last year.
