The Muhamasheen community is a Yemeni minority group that has traditionally been exposed to entrenched and systematic discrimination, social exclusion and limited access to essential public services. “When I went for an examination at the specialist doctor, she told me that my pregnancy was in danger of miscarriage and that I had to use a remedy until the eighth month. My difficult financial condition prevented me from purchasing the prescribed treatment. I always felt that something might go wrong, until the baby actually comes into the world. I was afraid of losing my child and being deprived of being a mother one day,” says Awadhah. With funding from Global Affairs of Canada (GAC), CARE provides vouchers to cover the cost of reproductive health (RH) services and transport expenses for 200 pregnant women from far-off areas that have had limited or no health facilities around them. The assistance is aimed at facilitating timely access to quality life-saving services such as emergency obstetric and newborn care.
