Weeks after the magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the remote Highlands of Papua New Guinea on 26 February 2018, some families are setting up and sheltering in makeshift camps. In these camps, there is a high risk of disease and conflict.
There are reports of at least 20 fatalities, many injuries and widespread damage to infrastructure, food gardens and water sources across PNG.
The affected region is incredibly remote, can only be reached by plane or a full day’s drive from the nearest population centre and landslides have damaged many roads.
CARE Australia has launched an emergency response and will distribute relief items to families in urgent need.
CARE’s Country Director in PNG Justine McMahon said, “We felt it strongly where we were, which was 400km from the epicentre. I can’t imagine what it would have been like. It happened at 3.30 in the morning. To be woken up like that, the noise, the destruction, it must have been absolutely frightening.”
