I the village of Inhamizua the secondary school was used as an emergency shelter for local residents. Approximately 300 people had sought shelter in the school, but several of the school buildings were damaged during the Cyclone Idai as it made landfall along the Central Coast of Mozambique, generating winds of over 200kph and torrential rain. The storm victims recounted stories of losing everything and not knowing what was next.

Praia Nova Village was one of the most affected neighborhoods in Beira. Being a located on the coast, this shanty town of loosely built homes were extremely vulnerable to the high winds and rain. Following the cyclone families are returning trying to pick up the pieces of their lives.

“When the storm started we began running to find a safe place. We had no food and our clothes were soaked We couldn’t believe to be alive.
“We were very scared when the storm started. And now we are here. We have lost clothes and even food.
Everything is wet including clothes.”
Diolinda Fabião, 14, collect water from a open well with other women. This water is not potable, but is all the community has.

“I was sleeping and I woke up because I felt like I was floating. But my leg was actually in water. So I woke up my mother and we took our food and went too look for a safe place. We could save some food. But I lost all my school books and clothes because they were all in the water.”
