“As a child, I lived next to a health center. There was a great midwife working there. I looked up to her and because of her I became a midwife too,” says Munguci Hope Mercy.
She has been working in the Rhino Camp settlement in Uganda for three years. In addition to Ugandans, there are mainly refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and South Sudan. Munguci comes from Rhino herself, completed her training in neighboring Arua and therefore knows exactly how great the need for medical help for mothers in the region is.
“Our health center is something special. Thanks to CARE, we have an operating room, a laboratory and two doctors here. There is nowhere else within a radius of 21 km.”
Maternal mortality in Uganda is 284 deaths per 100,000 births, the worldwide average is 223. Munguci would like to further improve the situation in the country to reach a level below the worldwide average. She gives trainings in family planning, works in the operating room, gives vaccinations, and takes care of the preventive and aftercare of mothers that gave birth. She often looks after three to four women at the same time during birth, even at night. However, she cannot imagine working anywhere else. "I'm needed here, I know how important my work is."
