Bridget is a hard-working mother and grandmother living in Simoonga on the outskirts of Livingstone in Zambia. Roughly, Simoonga is about 10km from the centre of Livingstone, and transport presents one of the largest barriers to women like Bridget. In some cases, women like Bridget take loans to cover the cost of travel, which means they can protect their working capital. Dependent on the types of business operated, some women from the area in which Bridget live may travel to South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana or Zimbabwe to purchase materials/goods required for their businesses.
Bridget has four children and is pictured with her grandson Nelson. To provide for her family, she runs a small business in the local marketplace. Every day, she buys the ingredients required to make mango fritters. It costs her about 40 kwa to travel each way town so she can buy the ingredients. In addition to selling her fritters, Bridget also sells a range of vegetables.
Bridget is proud to be the Chairperson of Simoonga Centre and was very keen to be one of the first entrepreneurs to speak to the Lendwithcare team when we visited. She received her first loan through the Microloan Foundation last year, but COVID-19 heavily impacted her business at the time, and she was unable to grow her income by much. She is now starting to recover and is proud to support her family.
Bridget’s young children are aged 5, 7 and 9 years old. When asked what her children want to be when they grow up, she told us that her eldest had been speaking to her earlier that day about becoming an accountant. She told him that he has to study harder at school but she thinks he can do it.
