Through local partners, CARE distributed food parcels in several nieghborhoods that have been impacted by the explosions in Beirut, thanks to a EUR 50,000 emergency fund from CARE France.
One month since the explosions that ripped through the heart of Lebanon's capital, Beirut, on August 4th, there are at least 180 people dead, over 6,500 people injured and 300,000 people left without homes, according to UNOCHA. The August blasts will have broad and long-term consequences on the country as a whole due to Lebanon’s deepening economic and multi-faceted crisis, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the needs are immense during this time of multiple crisis hitting Lebanon, CARE's teams are continuing the efforts in the field in all fronts. To date, as of 4 September, CARE Lebanon has reached 9,820 individuals with food parcels and hot meals, and 225 individuals with dignity kits and PPE kits to populations affected by the blast. The food distribution is funded by CARE France´s contribution of EUR 50,000 for the inception of CARE´s Beirut Emergency Response Strategy to the Food Security Sector (FSS) and by the WFP´s in-kind donation of food parcels. The distribution of dignity kits and PPE kits is funded by the UN Women and the Government of Japan.
CARE Lebanon is calling for an additional US $15 million over 3 years to help the approximately 300,000 worst affected people, and to provide displaced people food, shelter, hygiene and sanitation items, and psychosocial support.
